Darien Police responded to a home on Red Rose Circle on a report of attempted mail theft on Wednesday, Oct. 2 around 5:30 p.m.
The report stated the description of the suspects as two or three black males driving a yellow Nissan Xterra with New York registration, police say.
Officers were unable to locate the vehicle, but the caller reported seeing it drive past his home twice, according to police.
The driver then allegedly stopped the vehicle in front of the man’s house, and a passenger exited and started to walk toward his mailbox, police say.
The passenger then allegedly reached into the man’s mailbox, prompting the man to confront him and ask, “can I help you?”
In response, the passenger ran back to the vehicle which then left the scene at a high speed, police say.
Police say the vehicle was identified after the man was able to capture several photographs during the encounter. It was determined to belong to Richard Williams, 23, of the Bronx, according to police, who say a Bridgeport address was found for Williams as well.
Detectives contacted Williams, who allegedly confirmed being in Darien on the date of the incident.
Williams claimed that he was with a friend who directed him to a residential neighborhood, exited the vehicle and got into an exchange with the resident, police say.
Williams was subsequently interviewed at headquarters and consented to a search of his vehicle, which police say was found to contain checks, articles of mail from other residents of Darien and a blank roll of prescription marijuana labels.
Officers subsequently obtained an arrest warrant for Williams, who allegedly continued to deny having any knowledge of the contraband in his vehicle.
Williams turned himself in on Thursday, Oct. 31 and was charged with sixth-degree larceny, third-degree identity theft and sixth-degree conspiracy to commit larceny. Williams was released on a $25,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Friday, Nov. 8.
Investigations for this case are ongoing.
